5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO MEXICO
Even though Mexico has been my home for more than one year now, I’m still learning new things on a regular basis. Mexico is an amazing country, it is great for expats with a lot of pros, and you should know some things before moving to Mexico. Let’s speak about them today!
CHOOSE YOUR PART OF MEXICO
When you move to Mexico you might understand that it is a huge country and it is not only about palms and beaches. There are colonial cities, mountain towns, tropical and subtropical areas. There are a lot of choices and you need to understand what kind of Mexico is the best for you.
So when making the move to Mexico, firstly you need to decide what kind of atmosphere you want to live in. Of course, everyone dreams of sitting on a tropical beach with a glass of wine, and while that can be a reality if you choose it, there are some things to consider.
MEXICAN LIFESTYLE
If you decide to move to Mexico you should remember that everything here is very slow. When in Mexico, never expect that people will be on time. People do not hurry here at all. In fact, expect them to be late, almost every single time. Just sit back, relax and try to take it all with a pinch of salt. While you might see it as being rude, unfortunately, they honestly won’t think anything of it.
THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO FIND FRIENDS. I have never learned more about a city than when I joined a Facebook group dedicated to its locals and soon to be locals.
RENTING AN APARTMENT AS A FOREIGNER CAN BE TRICKY
If you know Spanish – you are lucky. It will be much easier to find something good for a long term. Mexico has plenty of rental flats available. However, it’s important to know Spanish to receive a better price. If you want your own apartment, the bureaucracy can be a bit challenging. Usually, to rent an apartment you need to pay a deposit for two months and sign a contract.
BRINGING YOUR FURRIES.
If you want to bring your dog or cat with you to Mexico you need a health certificate from your local vet with proof of immunizations and proof of rabies shot. The pet certificate needs to be completed and dated within a week of your travel date.
HEALTH INSURANCE
Healthcare in Mexico is good and affordable. Having comprehensive international health insurance as an expat is a must.
In Mexico, visiting a doctor, dentist, or buying prescriptions is affordable for almost anyone. Even without insurance. You will pay just $20 to see a doctor.
BANKING SYSTEM
This setback can be a disappointment to expats who move to Mexico hoping banking will be as easy as in their own countries.
In Mexico, banking is usually done in person, and the queues are always absurdly long. To solve small issues, answer questions or even transfer money, you usually have to take care of things face-to-face.
Mexican bank consultants will try to sell you digital services, but you’ll still end up standing in line at the bank.

Puerto Vallarta is one destination that will stick with you for the remainder of your life. While other beach destinations in Mexico were all but built around tourism and have essentially become little American enclaves over the years. Puerto Vallarta has retained its cultural roots and is still just as much an authentic port town as it was a century ago. It’s a place that is bursting with history, culture, and soul. As such, we firmly believe it’s one of the top vacation destinations in Mexico.

Here, the mountains, jungles, and sea all come together in a stunningly beautiful way. Puerto Vallarta’s downtown district, Zona Romantica, with its cobblestone streets and charming shops, will make you feel like you just stepped back in time to a period when life was simpler and slower yet somehow happier.
In almost every single way, Puerto Vallarta is simply stunning. It’s also got plenty of heart, with endless things to do and see at just about any time of the day. It’s a rare example of a city where tourists, ex-pats, and locals all live together harmoniously. The combination of all of those cultural influences is nothing short of remarkable.
If you’re looking to escape the cold of winter, there’s no better place than Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This beautiful area has warm weather year-round and an interesting culture to boot. Watch this video in full to learn more about some of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta so you can start planning your trip!
Best Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
In this video, I walk you through a list of some of the best food in Puerto Vallarta and you don’t even have to waste your time watching me eat it or listening to me ramble on. I simply give you the name of the restaurant or street food stand so that you can look it up or save it to your Google maps and then show you what to eat there and keep it moving. By the end of this video, you will have at least 20 delicious places bookmarked for your trip as well as some cool things to do in Puerto Vallarta and an amazing place to stay.
As always, my goal when I travel to any city in the world is to find the very best food I can. Typically, that means avoiding touristy areas, but some of the best food in Puerto Vallarta can be found right in the heart of Zona Romantica such as the birria tacos from Birria Robles and the tongue and cheek tacos from Tacos de Cabeza el Chulo, just to name a couple of my personal favorites. (Many more are named in the video.)
However, we also took the time to spread out of Zona Romantica and venture into some of the other neighborhoods where locals live (as I like to do) such as 5 de Diciembre and Pitillal to check out some other spots that came highly recommended to us by some friends of ours who live in Puerto Vallarta and know what they’re talking about when it comes to authentic and delicious Mexican food.
We only had five days to explore, so we hit as many as we could in that time and I know I missed a ton of good places, so please be sure to leave a comment and let me know where I should go next time I visit if you like the kinds of food I’m showing in this video!

Where is Las Pilitas, why is there a seahorse statue there and more: https://www.puertovallarta.net/what_to_do/sculptures-the-seahorse-las-pilitas
“El Niño Sobre el Caballo de Mar,” or “The Boy on the Seahorse,” was first erected in Las Pilitas and is now commonly referred to as The Seahorse Statue “El Caballito de Mar.” Rafael Zamarripa created it and installed it in 1968. A replica is the first statue of many along Puerto Vallarta’s coastal promenade and was put in place in 1976, after a storm carried the original one at Las Pilitas away into the sea, and the town requested a larger duplicate. This one was placed in a more secure spot on the Malecon. Fortunately, the actual statue was found and returned to Las Pilitas (it was swept away again during Hurricane Kenna in 2002 and recovered once again).
Today, it’s still there for you to see. As you can see, the concrete block has been strengthened with iron bars, and the sculpture itself is also reinforced. You’ll find it before getting to El Púlpito, the small hill at the southern end of Los Muertos Beach. Las Pilitas themselves are just a series of boulders on the beach. It’s “mucho más interesante” now that the sculpture has been added.
