Amateur footage captures the devastating aftermath of heavy rains and flash flooding in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The city was hit hard just days after Hurricane Lydia made landfall on the Pacific coast. Streets turned into rivers, vehicles were submerged, and homes and businesses were inundated. This video showcases the impact of the flooding, from the swollen Cuale River overflowing its banks to the heroic efforts of residents and volunteers during the recovery. Despite the extensive damage, no lives were lost, thanks to the prompt actions of local authorities and volunteers. The city faced an estimated $10 million in damages, but the community spirit and determination of Puerto Vallarta shone through as they began the cleanup and recovery process. The footage illustrates the challenges posed by extreme weather events linked to climate change, highlighting the urgent need for improved flood defenses and emergency response practices. Puerto Vallarta’s resilience and determination are key assets as they work towards a stronger, more resilient future. Climate change is causing more frequent and severe weather events, and communities like Puerto Vallarta are on the front lines of this global challenge. Despite the scars left by the flood, the city remains open for business and ready to welcome visitors to its beautiful beaches and vibrant communities.

https://www.puertovallarta.net/espanol/que-hacer/mirador-cerro-de-la-cruz/
(Mirador el Cerro de la Cruz) The Hill of the Cross Lookout in downtown Puerto Vallarta.
https://www.puertovallarta.net/what_to_do/cerro-de-la-cruz-lookout/
The El Cerro de la Cruz Lookout in Puerto Vallarta is a popular and fun lookout that offers 360° panoramic views of the city and the Bay of Banderas. It certainly offers some of the best vistas in the area, it’s just 15-20 minutes walking from the Malecon (if you are in good shape) here on this video we’ll show you an easy way to get there along Abasolo Street. While it is a challenging hike for some, there’s the option to drive to the base of the stairs, I’ve seen people arrive there on ATVs.
This great lookout is on the East side of downtown Puerto Vallarta on the hillside. From here, you can see all the way from the rocky outcropping of Los Arcos (The Arches) on the south side of the Bay all the way to Punta Mita on the north part of the bay on the clearest days.
To get to the lookout (mirador), you can walk up either Aldama Street, Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez Street or the more direct and scenic Abasolo Street starting from the Malecon that’s shown as the option in this video. The path is marked and takes you through the downtown area and then up the hill up many steps. The total distance from the Malecon is about 1800 feet (550 meters) with the climb taking 15-40 minutes depending on your pace. I’ve not found the height of the lookout yet, so I won’t add it officially, but I guess it’s around 200 to 300 meters up.
The Mirador/Lookout features different angles of Puerto Vallarta, a monument with the original cross on the hill, and an elevated platform with two upper floors for unobstructed views. Despite recent improvements like stairs and railings, it’s not ideal for those with mobility issues due to the steep and uneven path and the many steps up. The cable car worked at some point, I haven’t seen it work since 2019, sorry. There is now a café there at the top of the hill, maybe they’ve worked on it for their clients benefit.
